First Day Reflections: Carly’s First MyFredy Assignment

Today was my very first assignment as a Fredy, and I can honestly say — it meant more than I expected.

When I signed up, I knew this was more than a driving job. Still, heading out this morning, I felt a little nervous. Would I be what this client needed? Would I know the right thing to say? Would I show up as the trusted adult we promise to be?

The client I met today was a kind older gentleman living in a private group home here in North Carolina. His adult daughter, who lives out of state, had booked the visit. He needed to get to the VA for a long-overdue appointment. He walks with a bit of difficulty and lives with some memory challenges, so I knew being patient and present would matter.

From the moment I arrived, I could tell the day would be about more than logistics. He greeted me with a soft smile and immediately took my hand for balance. I could see right away that my presence — just being there, calm and steady — mattered to him. At the VA, I stayed close, helped him navigate check-in, and made sure we were ready when they called his name. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t complicated. It was just human.

“My dad felt really comfortable with Carly, our Fredy, and I’m so thankful for the care and concern she showed my dad. If I couldn’t be there, I’m glad MyFredy could.”

— Daughter of MyFredy Client

That meant everything to me. I’ve had jobs where the days blur together. Today didn’t. Today was about showing up for someone who needed to feel safe, seen, and supported. It reminded me why I signed up in the first place — to do something meaningful.

Looking forward to my next assignment.
